Treating Mental Health: How community alliances and system change can lead to better patient outcomes

Thirty-day hospital readmission rates are used as a quality measure and, in the area of mental health, the data are troubling. Among patients discharged for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, the 30-day readmission rate is the second highest of all major diseases. An article in this issue of WMJ describes a program that successfully reduced inpatient psychiatric readmissions by implementing organizational change and patient interventions.
