Opioid Use and Abuse: Changing Practices to Address the Public Health Crisis

Opioid abuse is a major concern in the United States. From 1999 to 2015, more than 183,000 people in the United States died of opioid-related overdose, and in 2013 alone, an estimated 1.9 million people abused or were dependent on prescription opioid medication. In this issue of WMJ, authors explore ways to address the problem as it connects to the practice of medicine.
