On a clear mountain night the Milky Way rises straight up between the trees. In medicine we use light to see what’s hidden and to reach what no hand can. This view reminds me how far light travels to find us in the dark.

About the Artist

Richard Abraham, MD, is a pediatric anesthesiologist. “My work begins before I ever reach for a medication. It begins with a frightened child, a worried parent, and a few minutes to help them feel safe. Medicine has also deepened my appreciation for light’s ability to reveal and heal. For more than a decade, I have photographed that light on location. I wanted to bring these views to people who might never have the opportunity to make the journey themselves.”
